Day 72 - Jewellery

This is a photograph of my maternal grandmother and her engagement ring which is now mine. She used to wear it with an old plaster wrapped around it to make it fit and it was black, dull and very unispiring! I thought it was just costume jewellery (they never had much money) and so when I lost my engagement ring I asked my parents if I could wear it. My parents were happy for me to have it - I took it to be cleaned and resized - was amazed when the jeweller put a value of £600 - £700 just for insurance purposes! Apparantly is an antique design that isn't made any more, it's platinum and the chips of glass are actually diamonds!! I did take it straight back to my parents but they insisted I keep it!

She was what we would now call a 'formidable woman' who didn't stand for any nonsense, spoke her mind very freely and woe betide anyone who crossed her! She was in service when younger and never learnt to read but was a very strong woman.
